A modern rehabilitation wellness centre in Knjaževac with EU support

The municipality of Knjaževac, with European Union financial support of over 260,000 Euros, now has a modern rehabilitation wellness centre next to the source of thermal mineral water in the village of Rgošte. EU funds, allocated through the EU PRO Plus programme, which is implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of European Integration, were used to complete the construction and equip the building with hydromassage tubs, saunas, steam baths and rehabilitation devices.

"The municipality of Knjaževac has significant potential for the development of mountain, rural and sports tourism, and now, with the support of the EU, we have significantly improved spa tourism. The new rehabilitation wellness centre in Rgoška Banja is an important incentive for the economy in our municipality, an increase in the number of tourists and new jobs for the people of Knjaževac", said the Mayor of Knjaževac, Milan Đokić. Knjaževac participated in the realisation of the project with around 29,000 Euros.

A modern heating and air conditioning system was installed in the wellness centre, so that the air conditioning chamber in the energy plant maintains the cleanliness, humidity and temperature of the air, while heating pumps were also installed for heating and cooling the rooms. The part intended for physical therapy is equipped with massage beds, shelves, changing cabins, and the municipality of Knjaževac should receive medical equipment in the coming period, which will enable visitors to use rehabilitation and modern physical medicine services in the centre under the supervision of doctors and physiotherapists.

The first phase of the intervention, which included construction works, water supply, sewage and underfloor heating, was financed by the municipality of Knjaževac and the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications. The works were completed in 2022, and the municipality of Knjaževac, with EU support, will continue the development of the entire complex through an integrated project led by the city of Zaječar. This phase of the intervention envisages the construction of sports fields, a children's playground and the connection of all contents into a single whole.

The project in Knjaževac is one of 20 economic infrastructure projects in the regions of Šumadija and Western Serbia and Southern and Eastern Serbia that the EU supports through the EU PRO Plus Programme with more than five million Euros. The projects aim to improve local competitiveness by improving business conditions and attracting new investments. The works include the construction or reconstruction and infrastructural equipping of industrial zones, tourist zones, as well as the preparation of technical documentation for the purpose of developing economic infrastructure.
