On a surface area of 2.5 hectares, within the city stadium complex previously renovated in 2019, two handball and four basketball courts were constructed with asphalt surfaces and accompanying equipment. LED floodlights now enable matches to be played during evening hours, while international-standard markings ensure the fields are ready for hosting high-level competitions—making Knjaževac a town where sports can be played to world-class standards. This summer, the first summer soccer tournament "Football Fest" was held on the fields, bringing together 30 teams from the Timočka Krajina and beyond.
Knjaževac, first in 2019, with donor support, renovated the stadium originally built in the 1960s, and then, thanks to EU funding, created even better conditions for all fellow citizens to enjoy sports and recreation. This infrastructure project, worth 199,769 Euros, was implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of European Integration. The European Union provided 169,804 Euros, with the local government contributing 29,965 Euros.
Thanks to this investment, Knjaževac now boasts a sports complex tailored to the needs of children, youth, sports clubs, recreationists, and even tourists. And more importantly – a town that invests in its future champions, a healthier society, and a community that comes together through sport.
This initiative is part of 39 local infrastructure projects across Šumadija and Western Serbia, and Southern and Eastern Serbia, funded by the EU through the EU PRO Plus programme with nearly six million Euros. These projects are improving the quality of life by upgrading educational, healthcare, and social welfare institutions, as well as sports and cultural facilities, public administration buildings, and communal services.
